Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
