Three members of law enforcement were killed and no fewer than 15 others got wounded in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The detonation took place as officers and emergency crews went into the residence in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female were taken into custody at the scene and another man who escaped following the blast was located shortly later. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.

The explosion could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location revealed the building left as a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to evict the three siblings in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, said the farmhouse was under an eviction order due to debts incurred by the siblings.

Mediators had been dispatched to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the home. When the officers arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member caused the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Claudio Papagno stated to news outlets.

A gas canister had been activated, and the blast directly hit our personnel,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the interior minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the explosion consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three officers of national police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

He thought the blast had taken place on a level above the doorway and told reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the blast, he said members had “heard a whistle, probably the gas canisters being activated”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to Italian media, mentioning that the three had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto united with other political leaders in paying tribute to the three men who had died in the line of duty.
